In industrial production, how do we detect hidden defects without damaging the product? Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) act like two "industrial detectives," using technological means to safeguard quality.
Magnetic Particle Testing specializes in "surface hidden dangers" of ferromagnetic materials. After a steel product is magnetized, if cracks or shrinkage cavities exist on its surface or near-surface, the magnetic field will be "disrupted" at the defect site. At this point, sprinkling iron oxide particles—like tiny magnets attracted to a magnet—they will quickly gather at the defect location, forming clear magnetic particle indications. These marks serve as a "portrait" of the flaw. From steel bars used in construction to welds in mechanical parts, MT uses visually detectable traces to protect the surface safety of metal products.
Ultrasonic Testing, on the other hand, focuses on "internal secrets." High-frequency ultrasonic waves, like invisible sound beams, penetrate complex structures such as thick steel plates and large castings. When they encounter internal cracks or voids, the waves reflect back. By analyzing the time and intensity of these reflected waves, inspectors can precisely "map out" the location and size of defects. This "X-ray-like" capability exposes hidden flaws in thick-walled containers, making UT a "safety sentinel" in the manufacturing of large equipment.
From steel box girders of cross-sea bridges to pipelines for oil drilling, MT and UT each contribute their unique strengths to implant "safety genes" into industrial products.
