What are the steps to replace the oil filter element?

A complete step-by-step guide for replacing the oil filter element

Replacing the oil filter is a crucial step in vehicle maintenance, as it can prevent the circulation of contaminants from wearing down engine components. The following steps integrate professional operational practices to ensure safety and efficiency. Before operation, corresponding tools and consumables (such as oil filter wrenches, new oil filter elements, new oil, etc.) need to be prepared.

Core steps:

Preparations and tool inspection ‌ :

Make sure the vehicle is parked on a flat ground, turn off the engine, apply the handbrake tightly (shift into gear for manual transmission and into P gear for automatic transmission), and fix the wheels with wooden wedges to prevent them from sliding. Warm up the engine for 3 to 5 minutes to raise the oil temperature to approximately 60°C (warm to the touch), enhancing its fluidity. However, be careful to avoid high-temperature components to prevent burns.

Tools to prepare: special wrench for machinery and filters (such as chain type or bowl type), torque wrench, oil collection basin, gloves, protective glasses, jack and safety bracket (essential for chassis operation) ‌.

// It is recommended to expand video resources to cover the operation details of different vehicle models

Consumables include a new oil filter (original or high-quality brand) and new engine oil (model as per the vehicle manual). Before installation, apply a small amount of new engine oil to the sealing ring of the new filter to enhance the sealing performance ‌.

Drain old engine oil ‌ :

Lift the vehicle and secure it with a safety bracket (to prevent the jack from failing), then remove the engine guard plate. Use a wrench to loosen the oil pan drain screw counterclockwise (usually 15mm or 17mm), and align it with the oil collection basin to drain all the old engine oil. Or use an oil pump to extract old engine oil from the oil dipstick hole (suitable for equipment without lifting). Let it stand for 10 minutes to ensure all the engine oil has drained. Old engine oil should be sent to the recycling point for processing ‌.

Remove the old filter element ‌ :

Use an engine filter wrench to loosen the old filter element counterclockwise and remove it at an Angle to prevent waste oil from dripping onto engine components. After removal, check for residues of the old filter element (such as metal debris), and thoroughly clean the oil stains on the filter element installation base (carburetor cleaner can be used) ‌.

Wear gloves for protection when disassembling. Old filter elements are hazardous waste and need to be recycled ‌.

Install the new filter element ‌ :

Apply new engine oil to lubricate the sealing ring of the new filter element in advance. Manually screw it into the base until it fits (avoid tilting), then tighten it clockwise with a tool (torque 20-30 Newton-meters, refer to the filter element instructions). Over-tightening may damage the sealing ring or cause oil leakage ‌.

The vertically installed filter element can be pre-filled with 1/3 new engine oil to reduce the start-up dry grinding ‌.

// Learn torque control methods

Adding new engine oil and final inspection ‌ :

Install the oil return screw and tighten it (torque 34-44 Nm), and slowly add new engine oil to the standard mark (use a funnel to prevent overflow). Start the engine and let it idle for 5 minutes to check if the filter element interface and the oil drain screw are leaking oil. After turning off the engine, let it stand for 3 minutes and check the oil level (make sure it is between the upper and lower lines of the dipstick). If there are any deficiencies, please add ‌.

⚠️ notes:

Safety first ‌ : Wear protective glasses and gloves throughout the journey. Safety brackets must be used for chassis operations ‌.

Synchronous replacement ‌ : Every time the engine oil is changed, the filter element must be replaced. Contaminants in the old filter element will quickly contaminate the new engine oil ‌.

Cycle suggestion ‌ : For ordinary vehicles, replace every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometers. In dusty environments or with construction machinery, shorten the cycle by 30% ‌.

The first operation is recommended to be carried out under professional guidance to avoid the risk of oil leakage or engine damage ‌.
