How to apply the sealing gasket when changing the oil filter element
When replacing the oil filter element, the correct application of the sealing gasket is a key step to ensure the sealing performance. The specific operation is as follows:
⚙️ operation steps for applying sealing gasket
Clean and inspect
Before installation, thoroughly clean the interface of the filter element base to ensure there are no old oil stains or impurities remaining (carburetor cleaner can be used to wipe) .
Check whether the sealing ring of the new filter element is intact (without cracks or deformations) .
Lubricated sealing ring
Material selection : Take a small amount of new engine oil (old engine oil or grease must not be used), and evenly apply it to the surface of the sealing ring .
Dosage control : Apply a thin layer to cover the entire rubber ring. Avoid excessive application which may cause slippage .
Installation instructions
Manually screw the filter element into the base until the sealing ring fully conforms to the base plane .
Continue to tighten by hand for about 3/4 turns (about half a turn to one turn) until you feel obvious resistance, then stop .
Do not forcibly tighten with tools, otherwise it will cause the rubber ring to be squeezed and deformed or the filter element housing to break .
⚠️ Key risk warnings
The main cause of oil leakage is : 80% of self-changing oil leakage accidents result from the sealing ring not being oiled or being installed at an Angle .
Dry grinding risk : unlubricated sealing rings are prone to tearing when tightened and accelerate aging and failure at high temperatures .
Model differences : For some high-end models (such as BMW and Toyota), the filter element housing material is relatively brittle, and the tightening force needs to be more strictly controlled .
✅ verify after operation
Start the engine and let it idle for 5 minutes to observe if there is any oil seeping out from the filter element interface. If leakage is found, immediately turn off the engine and recheck whether the sealing ring is misaligned or damaged .
Professional advice : For the first operation, refer to the sealing ring specifications in the maintenance manual (such as a 1.5mm diameter nitrile rubber ring), and give priority to using a filter element with a silicone check valve to enhance the sealing durability .
